In an Australian TV interview, Appliances Online expert Colin Jones debunked a number of recent viral TikTok hacks, including one that uses a sponge during the fabric softening stage.
The council claims to offer you a way to cut costs by skipping dryer sheets the next time you’re in the laundry aisle.
It was included in a recent post by TikTok user @hopehansborough.
According to the TikToker, you can simply use a fabric softener-soaked sponge instead.

While this might sound like a great way to minimize waste and save money on your laundry, Jones says you should avoid it.
As Jones explains, dryer sheets and fabric softener don’t have the same purpose.
“Dryer sheets are used to remove static from your clothes and add a fragrant smell to your clothes,” he says.
“Using a sponge soaked in fabric softener as an alternative to dryer sheets will not distribute the fabric softener evenly over your clothes.”
The unevenly distributed fabric softener will then leave stains on your clothes, he explained.
According to the appliance expert, there are other tricks to reduce static electricity that actually work.
On the one hand, the “cooling cycle” of dryers can be used to minimize static electricity.

Then, if you want to increase the scent levels, put the fabric softener in the washing machine.
Jones says if you follow these two steps, you can ditch dryer sheets.
